1. Feature Article: Teaching Peace, Living Peace
"Oh", said my husband Wray, a few days ago, "That's why so many
war movies on TV... November 11th approaching."
His comment brought to mind something I hadn't thought about in
years. When I was an Elementary Teacher, during the month of
November our class focus was on Peace, not War. Songs, stories,
Peer Mediation training, Conflict Resolution skills and win-win
problem solving techniques.
I used Red Grammer's songs from his tape "Teaching Peace". It's a
collection of songs created to help children and their parents
break down the "big' idea of World Peace into the individual daily
actions that will make it a reality. It is now available as a CD
at
http://www.redgrammer.com
(On the top navigation bar click on 'store'. Scroll down past the
CD to find songbook and teacher's guide as well.)
We read "
Sadako and the 1000 Paper Cranes" by Eleanor Coerr.Of course we folded paper cranes.
Another Art project was creating a wall hanging of peace symbols.
Each child embroidered a square and I stitched it together. At the
Remembrance Day assembly, 2 children presented the wallhanging to
the Principal to be hung in the school.
I long ago passed my whole set of resources on to other teachers.
A current book is "
As a young child, the third of six in our family, I assumed the
role of Peacemaker with my siblings.
One powerful experience I had was during Jean Houston's Mystery
School in 1993 doing the exercises that formed the basis of a book
she was writing at that time. "
In her Introduction she states, "This book invites you to
participate in a legend about a bringer of peace, a creator of
community, a changer of his world. It's one of the richest stories
to come out of North America, yet for non-Native Americans, it is
one of the least known."
Jean states, "This book is intended to enable groups of people
to experience together the transformational power of one of the
greatest stories ever told."
"The Imp" was conceived during one of the exercises Jean created
for this story!
Last Monday I received an email about a program that James
Twyman,
"The Peace Troubadour", has. From that e-mail:
"People around the world are asking the same question. "What can
I
do to contribute to creating a world of peace and compassion?" It
is easy to feel powerless, as if we cannot affect real change. The
Spoonbenders Course is designed to teach you skills that will help
you be a "Spiritual Warrior" in your life, and in the world. You
will learn to open centers of energy that have always existed
within you, but have never been tapped before, then apply that
energy to promoting peace.

2. Coaching Q&A: How can I Reduce my Stress Level at Work?
This month's Q&A is provided by Linda Hamilton, a certified life
and executive coach. Reprinted with permission.
See her bio at end of article.
Q: There are people away in my office and as a result much of
their workload has fallen on my shoulders. There is a ton of work
to do and I'm stressed all the time. How can I reduce my stress
level at work?
A: In today's workplace, there is so much pressure to perform and
to get more done in less time with fewer resources - sound
familiar? Want to reduce your stress starting right now?
Here's your answer: Laugh!
Countless research studies have shown that laughing reduces
stress, lowers blood pressure and boosts immune function, which
produces disease destroying antibodies. Laughter also triggers
the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, and
produces a general sense of well-being.
A recent study also showed that preschool children laugh up to
400
times a day, but by the time we reach adulthood, we laugh a mere
17 times per day on average - how sad is that?
Laughter is like an exercise. In fact, according to Dr. William
Fry, one minute of laughter is like 10 minutes on a rowing
machine. Laughter promotes instant relaxation, which in turn
supports a more positive mental attitude. As a result, you'll make
better decisions, feel more relaxed and increase your productivity,
which will make those all-too-busy days more enjoyable and more
manageable.
Find humour in you life and life's situations. When you catch
yourself being rigid, frustrated or defensive, find the humour in
the situation and start laughing.
"Fake it until you make it." It's been proven that faking
laughter
has the same effect on the body as real laughter. Practice laughing
five minutes a day to start. Bottom line: Laughing at work makes
good business sense.

protein powder to my green smoothie each morning.) I recently
