2. Coaching Q&A: So many things to do. Where do I start?
This month my Buddy Coach, Maureen Miller, has provided the Q&A.
She and I have been coaching each other for over 4 years.
Q: I have so many things I have to get done! I don't know where to
start. Is there some systemized way of prioritizing what I want
and need to get done? Lizzy in a tizzy.
A: Dear Lizzy,
I'd like to start by asking you some questions.
1. How often do you think of all the things you need to get done?
Weekly? Daily?
This alone can often lead to a huge insight as to exactly how much
of your time you spend just thinking and not even doing. Often this
awareness will get you moving towards making a change.
2. How much time do you spend thinking about these items once they
surface in your mind? 5 minutes? An hour? All day?
Again you may not realize how stuck you are (and how often you end
up in that place.)
3. How important is it that you come up with a solution to get
these tasks organized?
Rate each item on a scale of 1 (very important to YOU) to 10 (not
important for YOU).
This question may lead to a powerful insight that maybe it's not
important to you but to someone else. If you are grappling with
more than one issue it can lead to you prioritizing where to
start.
4. How do you FEEL about the thinking time spent on an issue?
There is ALWAYS an emotional investment with anything you do.
Explore your actual feelings about a particular situation. It
might be the only thing holding you back.
5. What are the main insights on this issue so far?
This may help rekindle the inspiration that got you moving forward
in the first place.
6. Rate on a scale of 1(very confident) to 10 (no confidence) that
you have all the information you need to take action.
Too often inspirational moments can disappear due to a lack of
tools and/or skills.
Answering these questions honestly will help you to prioritize.
When you are ready to move onto the next step, I'd ask you about
some possible paths we could take from here, how would you like to
explore some different ideas to move forward and how can I help
you from here?
This could mean exploring resources I have, or that you have, and
adapting them to suit your needs. (I've yet to find a resource that
I haven't had to tweak in some way to make it work for me.)
I would request that you take a specific action that you agree
would work for you. Then set up a method for you to provide me
with feedback on your progress on a regular basis. This could be
an email or a quick phone call on a specific date.
Reviewing a moment of inspiration regularly "locks" the new
thought in place so it has time to become part of who you are.
Kind of like when you learn to ride a bike.
I hold you capable and intelligent enough to come up with answers
that will work for you. What I provide is being non-judgmental;
asking thought-provoking questions; listening; intuition and
accountability.
