1. Feature Article: Are Robert Bateman and I the Only Two in
the World?

Are Robert Bateman and I the only two what?

"Possibilists."

My 1574 page dictionary does not even contain the word!

In his book, Thinking Like a Mountain, renowned wildlife artist
and environmentalist, Robert Bateman, wrote, "Possibilists
believe that no matter what your circumstances, you can alter the
direction your life is taking. There are always choices, an
infinite number of possibilities. I am a Possibilist. I believe
that humanity is master of its own fate."

That statement grabbed me. I knew when I read it that I was a
Possibilist. I knew when I was writing The Imp Journal that I
wanted to include that quote.

Not only did Bateman grant permission to quote, he was the only
person whom I quoted that wrote a lovely note back acknowledging
receiving his copy of the The Imp Journal after it was published.

When I met Bateman in person, in 2003, he autographed my copy of
Thinking Like A Mountain with the words, "From one Possibilist to
another".

OK, 'possibilist' wasn't in the Dictionary.
So I did an online search.

Holy Cow! Oh, heck, Ignoble Munchy Protestations!!
Guess Robert and I aren’t the only Possibilists.

From ‘The Labour Elector’ dated August 10th, 1889:
"... merely observe that the Possibilists could hardly offer a
greater insult to the Marxist Congress than to ignore the process
of the verification of its own credentials...".

And from another website: " there is a heated dispute among
consequentialists concerning the following deontic principle..."
-- which had something to do with Possibilists but by now I was
getting rather confused!

'Deontic' is not in my 1574 page dictionary, either! ('Deontic' is
however, a seven-letter word. Remember that the next time you’re
playing Scrabble.) I found 'deontology' in the dictionary...

Somehow, it seems, the older definition was "the possibilist holds
that possible worlds other than the actual world exist..."
Ah, the realm of philosophers...

By Bateman's definition, are you a Possibilist, too? If so, just
send a quick email and I’ll count how many of our subscribers see
themselves as Possibilists.
possibilist@theimpjournal.com
You may wish to share how you altered the direction of your life.

I love playing with words but I’m not into serious philosophical
discussions. To see how The Imp and I play with words click on
the following URL for some sheer nonsense. It might even sound
philosophical...
http://www.theimpjournal.com/nonsense

You are invited to catch the nonsensical spirit of "The Imp" and
share your nonsense with us!

And when you email me that you are a Possibilist, I’ll send you
an e-book copy of the nonsense "philosophy?" of The Imp and I
when it is completed. It will have 10 'speeches'.

2. Coaching Q&A: Oops! Am I doing it wrong or doing it right?

My own question this month about this column: Am I doing it wrong
or doing it right?

Why am I even asking?

As a Personal Life Coach, I strive to IMProve my skills. Recently
I attended a teleclass where Coach Trainer David Rock spoke about
scientific research on the brain and practical applications to
coaching.

What he said threw me for a loop thinking about this column!

Rock states we are born with neurons but without connections
between them. He likens this to a city of buildings which have not
yet had electrical wiring done between them. Because we all have
different experiences, our brains all get 'wired' differently.
Each person’s network of connections is different.

Another way to think of it is as a map. We think in ‘maps’
(visually). Each map is unique.

Coaching pitfalls:

1. The Coach has insights about their clients BUT the client needs
to have insights, make new connections in their own brain for
themselves!

2. Notice who does the thinking about the issue. The other person
’checks out’ when the coach takes the lead. The client’s critical
thinking stops.

3. Does the coach’s brain get in the way? Your map is too
different. My way of doing is not your way of doing.

So... am I doing it wrong? I’ve come up with answers. Who has been
doing most of the thinking?

Or am I doing it right?

Have my responses given you a new perspective, another way for
you to look at the situation yourself?

Have they provided any ‘ahas’?

Great news! Your mind can change your brain!

We rewire our brain by thinking differently.

It’s easy.

In fact, we are adding to our wiring all the time.

Notice what you are paying attention to.

If you pay attention to problems, you ’grow’ problems.

If you pay attention to solutions, you ‘grow’ solutions!

There’s power in focus.

Ask yourself, "How have I resolved a similar situation in the
past?"

An ‘aha’ moment is an insight, a new configuration in your brain.
A new map is being created. Insight is what inspires you to take
action. In those moments you feel energized so it is IMPortant to
take action right away before the feeling dissipates.

According to Rock, the role of the Coach is to focus on client’s
thinking itself, on the client’s quality of thinking so they can
self-correct. Then the client is able to take action.

Don’t tell clients what to do. The client needs to do the work.

Stop doing it for them.

The coach’s job is to facilitate the client having insights. Help
them think better on their own.

I’m excited about the challenge and the possibilities!

Much of what David Rock discussed is from the book The Mind and
the Brain: Neuroplasticity and the Power of Mental Force
by
Jeffrey Schwartz.
Rock’s website is http://www.workplacecoaching.com

I’m still inviting your questions! This column shall continue. My
answers obviously provide a different perspective than yours!

What challenges are you facing on your journey to greater self-
empowerment? When you question is used, you’ll receive a
complimentary 40-minute coaching session by phone or a set of
whimsical Imp cards.

Client names are changed to maintain confidentiality.
Go ahead! Send your question to:
QandA@theimpjournal.com

Your question will be answered promptly.
No waiting til the next newsletter.

As "The Possibilities Coach", I help people expand their options,
look at things from a fresh perspective and get past obstacles.

September's t-shirt winner, Kathy Nielsen of Westville, Indiana,
says Of her Imagine Magnificent Possibilities t-shirt,"I love it!
Thank you so much." Adding a little about herself, "I make
customized jewelry. I'm looking forward to getting more involved
with the IMP Journaling."

October's winner is new subscriber Nancy More, who signed up at
the Healing Arts Network Trade Show in Campbell River, B.C.
On hearing she was a winner, Nancy's first words were, "Oh, I'm
so happy to have the Imp!"

There are 3 ways to win an Imagine Magnificent Possibilities"
t-shirt.
1. During the first month as a new subscriber.

2. When you become a member of "The Imp Community" online,
which happens automatically when you purchase The Imp Journal:
Guided Journal Writing for Personal Empowerment, Vol.1

http://www.theimpjournal.com/order-journal.htm

3. When you request game cards and mark your location on The Imp's
Guest Map. It's fun! There's only one rule to this game - don't
get caught doing it!
http://www.theimpjournal.com/where-in-world.htm

The Imp is now involved in the fun of geocaching! Game cards are
in a number of geocaches.

Geocaching is a game using a Global Positioning System (GPS).
There are caches all over the world which enthusiastic GPS users
seek out. The caches contain a log book and the expectation is to
leave something in the cache and take something from it.

For more information check out http://www.geocaching.com

You've heard it before - you are a product of your environment.
Actually, there are nine key environments. Are you creating yours
by design or by default?

If you live in Campbell River, I invite you to come out and hear
me speak on this topic at the Healing Arts Network meeting on
Wednesday, Oct 26th. $10 at the door. Refreshments provided.
Meeting is at the Maritime Heritage Centre, 7 to 9 pm.

To receive an information page about the nine environments and a
list of resources email me, Bev@TheImpJournal.com  and I'll
send it to you as a Word document attachment. Create your life
the way you want it! You have that power.

4.Inspirational Message to Ponder

The Imp usually encourages you to write the quote on a card,
read it regularly, and then journal about your thoughts, insights,
feelings and, especially, actions.

This month, well... that might be absurd.

"There is nothing so absurd but some philosopher has said it."
Cicero (106 BC - 43 BC),
